Microbiology OUTREACH Prize

The Prize (sponsored by Yakult) is awarded to a microbiologist who has undertaken high-quality outreach activities over a sustained period of time. The winner will receive £350 and deliver a talk on their activities at the SGM Autumn Conference, University of Warwick, September 2012.

Rules

  1. Nominations are invited on behalf of or from microbiologists in the UK or Ireland.
  2. Nominees may be at any stage of their career but would usually have been engaged in outreach activities during the last 2 – 5 years.
  3. Nominees may be registered for a PhD or employed at a higher education institution, a hospital or other organization (in the public or private sector).
  4. Outreach activities can be aimed at schools (but not those directly related to recruitment) or the general public.
  5. At least one example of the nominee’s outreach activities should have been delivered in the two years preceding nomination
  6. Focus of activities may be:
    • raising public awareness of microbiology and its impact on our lives.
    • enthusing students (at primary and secondary school level) about microbiology.
    • engaging an audience in discussion of the impact of microbiology on society.
    • exploring the social and ethical aspects related to an aspect of microbiology research.
  7. Typical activities include (but are not restricted to)
    • workshops
    • displays
    • presentations
    • debates
  8. Nominations must be made on the appropriate form. ONE copy of the completed nomination form and all supplementary documentation must be submitted for consideration.

Criteria for judging applications

  • Quality of the activities
  • Sustained activities over time
  • To what extent have the activities:
    > increased the target audience’s appreciation of the value of microbiology; and/or
    > enhanced the public's ability to assimilate information on microbiology and related issues in an informed and accurate manner; and/or
    > increased the target audience’s appreciation of the value of studying biological sciences / microbiology at school level and beyond
