Technician Conference Taster Grants
Purpose
The Society wishes to continue its support of technical staff working in microbiology laboratories in universities, colleges, hospitals/HPA, research institutes etc. who are interested in joining the SGM and attending its conferences but consider the costs to be prohibitive. In 2012 we are continuing to offer an opportunity for eligible technicians to sample an SGM conference with Technician Conference Taster Grants. The grant will include a contribution towards travel and bed and breakfast accommodation for an agreed number of nights and registration at the Associate Member early-bird rate. Priority will be given to those who have not had the opportunity to attend a scientific conference in the last 5 years.
Rules
- The scheme is open to technical staff working in microbiology laboratories whose salaries are supported by central university funds or by the NHS, or where alternative sources of conference funding are not available but excluding commercial bodies. Applications are invited from those on a salary no higher than £30 000 per annum (gross), on scales up to and including Medical School Technicians MST2/Grade 2, University Technicians UTSS Grade E and MLSO1s. Non members only - evidence of salary at date of application
must be supplied e.g. copy of monthly pay slip.
- Applications from technicians who work part-time or with other
circumstances that affect the ability to afford conference attendance
will also be considered. Please give details of such
circumstances on the back of the application form.
- Technicians who are not members of the Society and who have previously received a taster grant are not eligible to re-apply in 2012.
- For the Spring 2012 Conference applicants may claim for:
- Travel: contribution of up to £50 towards travel costs
- Accommodation: contribution of up to £60 per night towards bed and breakfast accommodation.
NB the number of nights claimed must not exceed the number of days the applicant is attending the conference.
- SGM Associate Member Earlybird Registration rate
NB Grants will not cover the extra cost of registering after the earlybird booking deadline and applicants will be responsible for this cost (£10 per day).
- Grants are limited to attendance at ONE only of the 2012 conferences listed below:
SPRING
AUTUMN
- Autumn 2012 Conference, The University of Warwick, England - 3-5 September 2012
- Irish Division Conference, University College Cork, Cork - 14-16 November 2012
- Applicants must register separately for the conference through the SGM Meetings Office. Payment must accompany registration and so it is advisable to submit the grant application well in advance of the booking being made.
- CPD/CPE certificates will be available at the meeting for
those requiring them.
- Applications must be made before the start of the meeting. No retrospective claims will be accepted.
- Grants are awarded at the discretion of the Society. Grant recipients who do not attend the conference will be required to repay the grant in full.
- Applications must be made on the appropriate form. ONE copy of the completed application form and all supplementary documentation must be submitted for consideration
